LUMENE Group is a Finnish beau­ty brand that draws inspi­ra­tion from north­ern nature to cre­ate award-win­ning skin­care, make­up and hair care prod­ucts. As the company’s inter­na­tion­al busi­ness expands and dig­i­tal chan­nels diver­si­fy, the com­pa­ny faces grow­ing demands in man­ag­ing prod­uct infor­ma­tion to meet the needs of var­i­ous stakeholders.

Lumene’s AI solu­tion deliv­ers greater effi­cien­cy and con­sis­ten­cy to con­tent management

Lumene decid­ed to solve the chal­lenge with the help of arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence by devel­op­ing its own AI solu­tion in stages. The goal was to enhance the dis­cov­er­abil­i­ty and reli­a­bil­i­ty of infor­ma­tion while automat­ing con­tent pro­duc­tion in a way that sup­ports the brand. Islet Group was select­ed as a part­ner in this jour­ney, bring­ing exten­sive expe­ri­ence in gen­er­a­tive AI, Microsoft tech­nolo­gies, and the knowl­edge of the unique aspects of Lumene’s industry.

Knowl­edge-based man­age­ment with AI – prod­uct search and com­par­i­son in Teams

In the first phase, Lumene want­ed to pro­vide employ­ees in dif­fer­ent roles with an effec­tive tool for search­ing and ana­lyz­ing prod­uct-relat­ed infor­ma­tion. The solu­tion devel­oped was an Agent inte­grat­ed into Microsoft Teams, i.e., an AI chat­bot that acts as a con­ver­sa­tion-based inter­face to Lumene’s prod­uct data­base for the user.

The agent under­stands ques­tions asked in nat­ur­al lan­guage, enabling users to search for prod­uct infor­ma­tion using EAN code, com­pare dif­fer­ent items, list prod­uct groups, or find out detailed infor­ma­tion such as active ingre­di­ents, intend­ed use, or pack­age sizes. In addi­tion, as a com­plete­ly new kind of func­tion­al­i­ty, the solu­tion can be used to search for suit­able prod­ucts freely by describ­ing the intend­ed use, user and oth­er fea­tures. The agent answers nat­u­ral­ly and accu­rate­ly to even dif­fi­cult ques­tions such as “Which prod­uct would be suit­able for the skin care of an envi­ron­men­tal­ly con­scious young per­son with sen­si­tive skin? ”

The solu­tion is based on Islet’s Retrieval-Aug­ment­ed Gen­er­a­tion (RAG) archi­tec­ture, in which directs user’s ques­tions to a search index con­tain­ing prod­uct infor­ma­tion through Azure Prompt Flow. The search is com­bined with gen­er­a­tive AI, which com­piles the answers based on facts. The solu­tion is thus inte­grat­ed into Lumene’s prod­uct infor­ma­tion man­age­ment sys­tem. The accu­ra­cy and trans­paren­cy of the agen­t’s answers were ensured by exten­sive val­i­da­tion of the answers as part of the devel­op­ment work. In addi­tion, the Agent val­i­dates its own answers before giv­ing the final answer to the user.

Auto­mat­ic prod­uct descrip­tions – in line with brand tone and in dif­fer­ent languages

In the sec­ond phase, Lumene expand­ed the use of the AI solu­tion to cre­ate prod­uct texts. Pre­vi­ous­ly, prod­uct descrip­tions had to be pro­duced man­u­al­ly and adapt­ed sep­a­rate­ly to the needs of dif­fer­ent retail­ers and mar­kets. This work was slow, sub­ject to errors and resource-consuming.

With the new solu­tion, prod­uct descrip­tions are gen­er­at­ed auto­mat­i­cal­ly based on a prod­uct descrip­tion tem­plate, accu­rate prod­uct infor­ma­tion, instruc­tions pro­vid­ed by the user and Lumene’s tone-of-voice mate­ri­als. For exam­ple, the user can request a prod­uct descrip­tion in Ger­man for a spe­cif­ic prod­uct code through Teams, which specif­i­cal­ly empha­sizes the pro­duc­t’s suit­abil­i­ty for sen­si­tive skin. The user can fur­ther refine the prod­uct descrip­tion with the Agent, request­ing changes, devel­op­ment sug­ges­tions or oth­er lan­guage ver­sions with dif­fer­ent emphases. The texts are con­sis­tent, brand-com­pli­ant and the solu­tion sup­ports the cre­ation of descrip­tions in dif­fer­ent languages.

Ben­e­fits include time sav­ings, accu­ra­cy, and con­sis­ten­cy in communication

The AI solu­tion has brought sig­nif­i­cant ben­e­fits to Lumene’s inter­nal work. Search­ing for prod­uct infor­ma­tion is faster and more reli­able. Prod­uct descrip­tions no longer need to be writ­ten from scratch, but are cre­at­ed in gen­er­at­ed in a mat­ter of sec­onds, always in line with the brand. This saves resources, reduces errors, and improves the qual­i­ty of con­tent pro­duc­tion. In addi­tion, a foun­da­tion has been laid for the cre­ation of the next AI capa­bil­i­ties and agents on a cen­tral­ized AI platform.

The AI solu­tion has sig­nif­i­cant­ly changed the way we man­age and uti­lize prod­uct infor­ma­tion. Now, our experts can find the infor­ma­tion they need in an instant and are able to pro­duce high-qual­i­ty, brand-com­pli­ant con­tent for dif­fer­ent mar­kets with­out extra man­u­al work. This frees up time, reduces mis­takes and makes us more agile.

This approach ensures that AI becomes an inte­gral part of the organization’s dai­ly oper­a­tions and strate­gic growth, rather than remain­ing a sin­gle experiment.
